I Earn a Good Salary. Why Do I Still Owe at Tax Time?
By Marketbox Tax Advisory · September 8, 2026
Short answer: Federal income tax withholding is a payment toward your final liability, not the final calculation. Your paystub may also include Social Security, Medicare and other deductions that are not federal income-tax payments. Start by separating them. A household can have substantial withholding and still have a remaining balance.
Why is a large paycheck deduction not enough?
Federal income tax withholding is a payment toward your final liability, not the final calculation. Your paystub may also include Social Security, Medicare and other deductions that are not federal income-tax payments. Start by separating them. A household can have substantial withholding and still have a remaining balance.
What information might my employer be missing?
Your employer generally does not have your complete household picture. A spouse’s earnings, another job, investments, rental activity or business income may change the result. The Form W-4 information you supply matters. Prepare a single household inventory and discuss state payments separately from federal payments.
How should I approach bonuses and stock compensation?
List expected bonuses, commissions, vesting and sales separately from base salary. Compare actual withholding with the household projection rather than assuming payroll will cover everything. Stock compensation can involve both compensation reporting and a later sale; collect the related employer and brokerage records so your advisor can reconcile them. Avoid making a sale or changing elections solely from this checklist.
What changes when I own rental property too?
Give your advisor rental income and expenses, depreciation schedules, acquisition and improvement records, financing details and anticipated sales. Rental losses do not automatically offset wages. A property strategy must be evaluated against applicable limitations, participation facts and the wider household plan. A large depreciation figure is not the same as a currently usable tax saving.
Does increasing withholding reduce my tax?
Not by itself. It changes payments toward the obligation. A hypothetical household with $80,000 projected total tax and $68,000 projected payments has a $12,000 projected remaining balance before other adjustments. That does not establish a penalty amount or a savings opportunity. Payment timing matters; ask your advisor to evaluate any penalty exposure separately.
When should I review the household projection?
Review after a job change, major bonus, vesting event, property transaction or significant income change—and before year-end. Use Q3 as a useful checkpoint, not a legal cutoff. Worksheet: expected income by source ___; projected federal/state tax ___; actual payments to date ___; expected remaining payments ___; remaining balance ___; next review ___. Complex income may require a full projection beyond a withholding calculator.
What should I review next?
Use the companion checklist below to identify missing information before your advisor meeting. Mark each item Ready, Missing or Not applicable; assign a responsible person and a follow-up date. Completion is preparation, not proof of eligibility or compliance.
